Looking for Educational Program Leaders: A Note from Jim

In 1990 I created the institute for Ecological Field Studies and ran it for 20 years. I am hoping to have more time in my retirement to create art and enjoy the Bahamas and would like to find partners interested in marketing or running programs on my property. I can provide island transportation, all meals, and a beautiful, remote, and safe place to stay right on the beach.

I’m seeking someone who can market to group leaders, teachers, youth church groups, etc. The groups can choose their own area of study, geology, marine ecology, birds, history, or art. No matter the choice of topic, the experience at The Outpost helps kids develop and know there is a whole world out there to explore.

In the past I marketed to AP biology teachers, and offered a free trip if they brought eight students. Each year we’d bring groups of 24 to 30 students at a time for a week stay. I had 300 students each summer and another 150 between new years and Easter. I can provide more information to interested parties about current fees as they depend on the groups needs. Ten years ago a common price for a week stay including an educational program, food, lodging, and transportation was $2,000 per student per week.

I’m looking for someone to market as a full partner, or individual group organizers to bring student groups, for any appropriate area of study. I have hosted some adult groups but this is a place built for youth. The cabins are old Bahamian architecture, the windows are screens and shutters, there is no AC, etc.

The Outpost and this island is truly a special place. Years ago FOX NEWS flew in with one of our groups and spent the entire week filming a 30 minute special on us. Coastal Living Magazine Wrote a five page story about us in Jan. 2007. My property was the main filming location for the TV show This is Paradise. The film crew for Hudson and McConaughey Fool’s Gold stayed here!

I took students to explore many popular and little known caves on Eleuthera.
The beach in front the Outpost has an excellent reef and I had students in the water multiple times a day learning about ocean ecology.
I love learning more about the human history of the Bahamas. My house is full of treasures that have washed up on the shores or been found in the field of Eleuthera. [The most special treasures I’ve found were handled by archeologists, but I’d love to tell you stories about them!]
I love woodworking and painting. This is a cabinet I made for my friends. I’d love more time make art!
